Biography

Liza Carrasco Rivera, DNP, WHNP-BC has been practicing as a Nurse Practitioner in Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Texas Medical Center at Southwest Women’s Health Alliance OBGYN Medical Center since 2005, previously known as Obstetrical and Gynecological Associates (OGA). She works in a private practice setting collaboratively with Ivonne Smith, MD. Dr. Rivera’s previous work experience as a Nurse Practitioner was at The Women’s Center at Twelve Oaks Medical Center and Baylor Teen Clinic serving the indigent, uninsured population.

Born in Houston, Texas, Dr. Rivera received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, graduating with honors in 1998. She worked as a labor and delivery nurse at The Women’s Hospital of Texas for two years prior to starting graduate school at The University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing in Houston, Texas. In 2002, upon completion of her Master’s Degree with honors and a focus on Women’s Health as a Nurse Practitioner, she began working with the indigent population and eventually ended up in the private practice setting in 2005. In 2015, she completed a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing in Houston, Texas, with honors and her capstone project was “Implementation of a Comprehensive Postpartum Depression Screening Toolkit: Breaking Barriers in Women’s Healthcare”.

Dr. Rivera completed numerous clinical hours during the doctoral program in different areas of women’s health care, including Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, as well as Maternal Fetal Medicine. She completed two fellowships during the last year of the doctoral program as well. The first fellowship experience was completed in the Texas Medical Center (TMC) with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for Harris Health Hospital System, and the second fellowship experience was with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Co-Founder of The Rose Breast Center in Southeast Houston. Both fellowship experiences strengthened communication and leadership skills on the executive level, and helped aide in the promotion of population healthcare. Dr. Rivera developed an educational breastfeeding video for patients in the Harris Healthcare System and a provider toolkit for the promotion of breast healthcare in rural communities for The Rose Breast Center.

Dr. Rivera has served as clinical faculty at The University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing from 2004 to 2006, and continues to serve as a volunteer clinical preceptor for nurse practitioner students in her current private practice setting.

Dr. Rivera is a Board Certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner with National Certification Corporation (NCC).
